Yoga Mix 07 - Prana Breath

Prana is a Sanskrit word which means "Life Force". Within yoga practice Prana can refer to the universal energy of all living and non living creations. The idea of Prana is not exclusive to yoga and Hinduism, it can be found in a number of different cultures, under various names such as Chi is Chinese, Mana in Polynesia and Orenda in the Americas to name but a few.

depiction of prana breath
A Prana Breath is that universal flow of energy which is inhaled and exhaled from the cosmic creator. You take in the oxygen produced from plants, your body in energized with life,  then you breathe out carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is then absorbed by plants and converted to oxygen once more. That oxygen is then taken in by another living being. As such, we are all one breath. You, me and every living soul on this planet shares one universal cosmic breath since time began until the end.
This yoga mix celebrates that very concept. Here you will experience deep meditative music that will allow you to concentrate on your breathing, while reflecting on what it means to exist on such a small scale in such a vast universe and sharing the breath of life with everything around you.

Yoga Mix 06 - Sands Of Time

Are you feeling stressed and tired ? Perhaps this mix will help you to wind down. Today I present an entho-ambient yoga mix with a cornucopia of traditional instrumentals from the East. You will here long sitar drones, Indian percussion and trance inducing mantras. This is music that works at the heart of deep meditation and yoga practice. A journey deep into the desert across the sands of time.

We begin with a lengthy song by Talvin Singh and Rakesh Chaurasia. At close to twenty minutes in length it is ideal for a more relaxed warm up and stretch before you get into some more demanding poses. This song can be found on the album "Vira". We then move on to another tune from Dan Blanchard who I featured on my previous yoga mix - Om Shanti Drift. This track can be found on his album "Awakening". Dan has spent his life studying Indian classical music and the album is highly recommended for yoga music lovers.

Following Dan we then have a couple of tracks full of enchanting flutes and sitars and then into a long meditative ambient tribal tune from Layne Redmond. This is a captivating track that uses the trance inducing qualities of hypnotic beats and repeated chanting to spellbinding effect.

Layne is then followed by a song from Dream Stalker taken off the psychedelic ambient downtempo compilation album "Paz 2". Perhaps better known for his techno/trance sounds, Dream Stalker really delights on this super relaxing slice of drifting ambiance.

We finish off with a track from Loren Nerell & Mark Seelig from their excellent collaboration album "Tree Of Life" and finally some deep, healing ethnic sounds via the ever excellent Anugama.

I hope you enjoy this mix and that it may help you in your continued yoga journey. This is also a great mix to use for meditation practice and I find it works exceptionally well as background music for art creation too. Feel free to add some comments below and let me know what you think. I'll endeavor to add some more mixes in a more timely fashion in the future so stay tuned and follow the Facebook page to keep up to date on new releases.

The music of yoga is generally thought to come in three forms. The first is slow, downtempo music with ethnic ambient sounds. This type of music is ideal for casual, relaxed yoga and is one of the most popular types of music for yoga practitioners. In my list of mixes below you can see mixes with this form of music marked "ethno-ambient".

Secondly, we have "uptempo beats" music that combines more dance music forms and louder beats. This style has become hugely popular over the last few years as producers seek out ways to merge ethno-ambient sounds with hip-hop, trip-hop , trance and other bass heavy genres.

Finally, the most relaxing form of yoga music is "deep meditation". This is generally beat-less music that is more suited for contemplative mediation mixed with yoga. I find this type of music best for individual practice where one wants to achieve the ultimate form of distraction free meditative yoga.
